Where it comes from

We chalk up where every fish came from.

Flake from Victoria. Butterfish from Western Australia. Blue grenadier from New Zealand. It goes on the board next to the price, because you should be able to ask what you are eating and get a straight answer.

Our supplier is on the board too. All our fish and seafood comes from Tim and Terry Oyster Supply, fishmongers at the Melbourne Wholesale Fish Market. The chips are steak cut, from Gembrook Estate.

The Apollo Seafoods shopfront on Gellibrand Street in daylight

The shop

A fish shop that is also a fishmonger.

Apollo Seafoods sits on Gellibrand Street between the butcher and the bakery, under a pressed tin ceiling with the boards running the length of the wall. Sam Perisanidis runs it.

It is not only a takeaway. There is a fresh fish counter here, and a good part of the trade is supplying other restaurants around Colac with their fish. That is why the board reads like a fishmonger's board, with species and origins on it, rather than just a list of fried things.

Home delivery has run out of this shop for years, long before it was something every kitchen offered.

Traditional Greek dress and an Apollo Seafoods sign at a community event in the square, Colac

Out in the town

Greek by name, and by kitchen.

The column on the sign is not decoration. There is a Greek streak through the food and through the shop, and you will find us out in the square when the town puts something on.

Colac is a town of about twelve and a half thousand people on the road between Melbourne and Warrnambool, and a good stop on the way back from the Great Ocean Road. Plenty of our reviews are written by people who pulled in on the drive and were glad they did.

Amazing fish and chips and even better customer service! Everything was fresh and delicious, and the owner was so kind and generous—he even gave us a free flake. It's rare to find such genuine hospitality these days. Highly recommend and will definitely be back! 🐟🤗

Awesome and thoughtful service. We ordered a total of three pieces of fish. The chef helped us to half the fish and put them into three separate boxes for easy sharing. The chips were really good. It remained crispy even when we take out our leftovers. The fish was fresh and tasty.

Amazing fish and chips! It's wonderfully situated in Colac, which is on the way back to Melbourne from the Great Ocean Rd if you're finding dinner. The atmosphere was homey and the service was great. Tried their mixed platter and we loved every bite!
